Operational Context

The Museum of Modern Art campus is located at 11 West 53rd Street in Midtown Manhattan. Total gross area for the buildings is approximately 744,000 square feet. Space types include museum space such as galleries, visitor amenities, administrative areas, laboratories, and supporting equipment spaces. Interconnected building sections including the original Goodwin-Stone marble-clad building from 1939, 1964 East Wing, 1984 Pelli expansion, 2004 Taniguchi expansion, and 47,000 square feet of galleries included in the 53W53 building opened in 2019.

Key measures implemented

The main actions implemented to reduce the energy consumption of this building.

Efficiency Investments

The Museum of Modern Art is advancing a coordinated set of energy-efficiency projects to modernize building operations and reduce utility use across its campus. Investments includereplacing the building automation system to improve monitoring and control; repairing the steam system, lowering distribution pressure, and replacing pressure-reducing valves to increase reliability and reduce losses; and recovering heat from condensate for beneficialreuse. Lighting fixtures were replaced throughout the museum with LED fixtures withadvanced lighting controls. Additional measures include upgrading domestic water booster pumps with variable-speed pressure control and converting kitchen exhaust systems tovariable-air-volume operation so airflow can respond to actual demand.

Technical Optimization

The Museum of Modern Art is implementing a set of targeted optimization measures to improve HVAC performance and reduce avoidable energy use. These efforts includerepairing valves and refining controls to limit simultaneous heating and cooling. Air-handling unit opertion was optimized so airflow and conditioning better match building demand. This included discharge air temperature reset and static pressure reset. Chilled-water system performance was optimized to increase cooling efficiency while maintaining the preciseenvironmental conditions required across galleries, laboratories, visitor spaces, and othermuseum areas. Condenser water temperature reset, chilled water temperature reset, and pumpdifferential pressure reset were implemented.

Use Sufficiency

MoMA implemented revised gallery temperature and humidity setpoints that allow greater seasonal variance.
