About this League

The USA National Energy League is part of the World Championship for Energy Savings (WCES) — a global initiative under the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction.

Implemented with support from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), the league leverages USGBC's decades of third-party verification, insights, and market transformation to scale energy-efficient, high-performance buildings.

As one of the world's largest building markets, the United States plays a critical role in proving the global impact of energy improvements and verified performance.

League Objectives

The league aims to identify and showcase the most energy-efficient buildings in the U.S., based on real, verified performance data to:

Eligible buildings will first compete at the national level in categories set by the national league manager, USGBC, to be recognised at Greenbuild 2026 in New York City. National categories include:

Top performers will qualify for international recognition at major climate events, including representation at COP31.

Please note: Any building that meets the WCES eligibility criteria can join the U.S. league to compete in the international award categories. However, only LEED-certified or previously certified buildings are eligible for U.S. award categories to be recognised at Greenbuild 2026.

Policy Context (United States)

The United States is advancing its approach to building energy performance as part of broader federal, state, and city-level climate commitments. Key policy drivers include:

In this context, the WCES provides a practical framework for identifying leaders and obtaining case studies of what is possible based on performance, which can be used to inform and support market-proof policy at the local and national level.
